It’s a New Year… and in the world of design and fashion… this means that some things that were old will be “new” again… and some things that were new will be… well, old news.

Such is the life of trending…

What do you do with trends? It’s tough… because some trends will turn into classics and you will be happy to have jumped on board, while others will be relegated to mistakes.

… and some items just become so dang popular that they in turn become derided for their popularity (while still remaining good design).

I’ve come up with some trends below that are quite recent… and I own/share in a few of them. I believe that if you inherently LOVE something… then just OWN it (no matter how many people besides you… do too)… and do so unapologetically! The trick is to mix/wear/display it in a style that is uniquely… YOU.

Tell me… are you tired of any of these trends? What would you like to see go away… and what would you like to see stay?

When I see an item (or copy of it) hit the sets of talk shows… I know it’s gone global… literally. West Elm’s Souk rug has become a popular Instagram background shot, designer fave, and all-around sensation. It’s an affordable, modern, stylish version of the tribal rugs we’ve been seeing so much of. I believe it’s going to stick around for a long, long time because of it’s versatility. You can slide it into almost any room and it will work. I had been eyeing a vintage Ben Ourain rug for a very long time, but I just couldn’t justify the price, so on Black Friday I caved and sprung for the Souk. Instagram shots to follow ;).

Cheers for chevron! A sibling to the herringbone (they are not the same, but similar)… this pattern can be seen anywhere, on anything. It’s fun, flirty and here to stay!

Antlers have been used as decor for centuries, but crossed over from “back country” to city chic in the last decade. I prefer the faux version over anything real, or else I get a little creeped out. How about you?

Another “what goes around comes around” decor trend… tufting ebbs and flows in popularity. I think we’ll see this trend tire out just a tad in the near future, but it will always be around for the long haul.

Typography posters… Can you BELIEVE  the trajectory of the Keep Calm phenomenon? I proudly own one and have it out for everyone to see because I still love it and like what it represents. How many of you have one?

These shots portray an Instagram trend that seems to be taking over the artsy set. The circle crop and the “shoe shot”… I know you’ve seen them. These pics are mine, so I’ve played with them too… but I feel like I don’t want to compete. What are your thoughts?

Oh Lucite, how I love thee. You can trend forever in my book ;).

Polka Dots are classic (so I really can’t say they are a trend), but they’ve been spotted (ha!) hitting the interiors world more frequently as of late. Let’s see how well they stick!

Ahhhh…. The Pouf! Is it as classic as a garden stool? No… but it’s cozy factor makes up for that.

The Hicks Pendant is blessed with the ability to be modern and retro at the same time… and for this reason (although it’s been seen EVERYWHERE))… it will remain popular. If I had a kitchen to remodel at the moment… I’d use it!
