Wow you guys. It’s week 5… the final reveal is next week… and I might have had one too many glasses of wine after our final big install today!

I gave a fond farewell to my hot plate (you might have seen this on my Instagram stories)…

… and said hello to my new BFF… this Hallman Industries stove.

I took this photo in the evening, in bad light, so that the big reveal will make you drool with envy at its gorgeousness.

Not really. But sort of.

I shouldn’t even be showing you my semi-styling shelfie moment.

But like I said above… wine.

My favorite tattooed crew from Bananas & Hammocks swooped in and dropped it like it’s hot.

New brass shelf above the stove, new cabinet and “desk” (pictured above), and a steel and reeded glass door to the pantry…

… BAM.

I can’t show you more… so I’m just going to post more “we’re half way there” pics to keep you guessing…

What I do want to show you (or rather tell you)… are a few things about design (especially custom)… that can force you to be flexible…

… because even as a seasoned designer… you can run into surprises!

Here are a few things that happened on this go round…

1. Old homes (mine was built in 1920)… never have even/level walls/floors/ceilings. For me this meant that the spacing between my new cabinet and the “desk” area became shorter, and the custom pot rack I had ordered (from ENGLAND)… did not work anymore…

… but the rack I already owned… worked. Was it what I originally wanted? No. But it looks beautiful just the same.

2. My contractor and I went back and forth a few times about installing our new brass shelf before or after tiling. We chose “after” (because it would give a more “natural” look), but because I chose an uneven, slightly “wonky” tile effect… the new shelf would not sit evenly against the wall and it was pushed slightly forward (about half an inch) in front of the cabinet. If I were SUPER OCD, this might really bug me…

… but because I love irregularity… I was VERY happy with the result.

3. I ended up taking the tile further up the wall than originally planned… and then I wanted to take it even further and tile the entire hood.

When I decided I wanted to do this… I went to order the tile… and it wasn’t in stock. So no tile. The hood is painted.

I love it… BUT…

… I will have a few options after this challenge has wrapped up… that I will ask your opinion about! Are you ready to help me make that final design decision???

TUNE IN NEXT WEEK… I CAN’T WAIT FOR YOU TO SEE THIS SPACE!!!

(… and please make sure to check out each previous week to see what I’ve been up to! Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4 ).
